2019 1st Weekend Tournament Re-Cap

Play opened up at Noon on Saturday, August 3rd, at three sites: Allison, Walford, Watkins. At Allison, the Allison Cats defeated Red Top, 10-6 in Game 1.  The Osage North Stars would score one run in the top of the 7th and leave two men on, but fell to Williamsburg 4-3 in Game 2.  Osage lost Game 3, when Red Top scored in the bottom of the 6th to win 1-0.  Williamsburg would win the day’s final game over Allison 8-0. At Walford, in Game 1, the Geneseo Rookies fell to Walford 6-0.   Norway would score one run in the bottom of the 7th to beat the Quad City 76’ers 1-0 in Game 2.  The QC 76’ers won Game 3 by beating Geneseo 11-0.  In Game 4, Walford scored one run in the bottom of the 6th to beat Norway 6-5. At Watkins, in Game 1, Watkins would outlast the Muscatine Flames and win 9-8 in eight innings. The Stars took Game 2, by beating the Whiteside County Wildcats 10-1.  Muscatine would then best the Wildcats 5-1. In the night cap, the Stars beat the Watkins Mudhens 10-1. The Tournament BYE went to the Stars, who allowed 1 fewer run than Williamsburg did. On Sunday, Red Top would knock Watkins out, 9-2.  The QC 76’ers ended Allison’s season 7-5. Muscatine would close out Norway’s year 9-3.  In the battle of the unbeaten, Williamsburg bested Walford 7-3, moving Walford to those teams that are now 2 & 1.

Sunday morning rain at Douglas Field in Rock Island threatened to

delay the 2019 IABA State Tournament, but the final three games

were played and the tournament was completed.

The Stars and Red Top would play game one at nearby Rock Island

High School’s field.   Red Top would score first, but Chico Lizarraga

would hit a two run homer  and the Stars would win 2-1.

The Ground Crew at Douglas Park worked feverishly, once the rain

stopped, to get the field ready to play and Game Two, between the

QC 76’ers and Williamsburg started one hour late at 4 pm.  Though

Williamsburg would score five runs in the bottom of the first inning,

the 76’ers continued to battle and took a 8-6 lead into the bottom

of the seventh inning.  Williamsburg would score one run before the

QC 76’ers turned a double play to close out the inning to win 8-7.

In the Championship Game, the QC 76’ers sored three runs in the

bottom of the first inning, but the Stars scored three in the second

to tie it up.  The Stars broke it open in the fourth when they scored

five runs, with the help of another two run homer by Lizarraga. The

Star’s took the title 11-4, and Lizarraga would be named the MVP.
